Whether you're picking up a needle for the first time or finally dusting off that sewing machine, these five tips will help you start your sewing journey with confidence — from choosing the right fabric to making friends with your iron.
So you've decided to learn to sew — welcome! Whether you've been inspired by a beautiful quilt, a garment you want to make yourself, or just the joy of creating something with your hands, sewing is one of the most rewarding skills you can pick up. Here are five tips to help you get started on the right foot.
Before you cut a single piece of fabric, get comfortable with your machine. Understanding how to thread it, adjust tension, and troubleshoot basic issues will save you a lot of frustration. The best way to do this? Take a class! Our beginner sewing machine class at The Wobbly Bobbin Studio walks you through everything you need to know in a friendly, hands-on environment.
You don't need to buy everything at once, but a few quality tools make a big difference. A good pair of fabric scissors (never use them on paper!), a seam ripper, pins or clips, a measuring tape, and an iron are your essentials. Browse our sewing notions collection to stock up on the basics.
Not all fabric is created equal — and the type of project you're making matters. Quilting cotton is tightly woven, easy to cut, and holds its shape beautifully, making it ideal for quilts, bags, and home décor. Garment fabric (like jersey, linen, or voile) is often softer and more drapey, designed to move with the body. Starting with quilting cotton is a great choice for beginners because it's forgiving and easy to work with.
In sewing, the iron is the most underrated tool in the room. Pressing your seams as you go — rather than waiting until the end — makes a dramatic difference in how polished and professional your finished project looks. Keep it nearby and use it often. You'll be amazed at what a difference it makes.
It's tempting to dive straight into a big quilt or a full garment, but starting small builds your skills and your confidence. A simple apron, a pillowcase, or a basic tote bag are all great first projects. You'll finish faster, feel accomplished, and be ready to tackle something bigger next time.
