Embroidery machines aren't just for experts. From monogramming to in-the-hoop projects, here are five simple and satisfying ways to use yours right away.
Embroidery machines can seem like a big investment — and a bit intimidating. But once you discover what they can do, you'll find yourself reaching for yours constantly. Whether you've just bought one or you're thinking about taking the plunge, here are some wonderfully simple ways to put an embroidery machine to work.
This is where most people start — and for good reason. Monogramming towels, tote bags, pillowcases, baby items, and clothing is fast, satisfying, and makes for incredibly thoughtful gifts. Most embroidery machines come with built-in alphabet fonts, so you don't even need to purchase extra designs to get started.
Appliqué — stitching a fabric shape onto a base fabric — is a beautiful technique that's much easier with an embroidery machine. The machine stitches the outline, you place your fabric, and it finishes the edges for you. It's perfect for kids' clothing, quilts, and home décor.
You don't have to sew something from scratch to use your embroidery machine. Hats, denim jackets, tea towels, canvas bags — almost anything can be hooped and embellished with a design. It's a great way to add a personal touch to plain, store-bought items.
Every quilt deserves a label, and an embroidery machine makes beautiful ones. Stitch your name, the date, and a short message onto a piece of fabric, then hand-sew it to the back of your quilt. A lovely finishing touch that will be treasured for generations.
"In-the-hoop" (ITH) projects are designs that are almost entirely completed in the embroidery hoop — things like zippered pouches, keychains, bookmarks, and stuffed animals. They're quick, fun, and make fantastic gifts. Once you discover ITH projects, a whole new world opens up.
