Thinking about learning to quilt? Here are five tips to help you get started — from choosing the right fabric and tools to why taking a class makes all the difference.
Quilting is one of the most rewarding crafts you can learn — and one of the most welcoming communities you'll ever join. Whether you've been admiring quilts for years or just discovered the art form, here are five tips to help you get started on the right foot.
Not all fabric is created equal, and for quilting, quilting cotton is your best friend. It's tightly woven, easy to cut accurately, holds a crease beautifully when pressed, and comes in an endless variety of colours and prints. Avoid stretchy or slippery fabrics until you've got a few projects under your belt.
A few key tools make quilting so much easier: a rotary cutter, a self-healing cutting mat, and a clear acrylic ruler are the holy trinity of quilting prep. Add a good pair of fabric scissors, pins or clips, and a seam ripper (you'll use it more than you think!). Browse our notions and rulers collection to get set up.
A quarter-inch seam allowance is the quilting standard, but here's the real secret for beginners: consistency matters more than perfection. If you sew a slightly different seam allowance, that's okay — as long as you're consistent across the whole project, your blocks will still come together beautifully. Investing in a quarter-inch presser foot for your machine is a game changer and makes hitting that seam allowance effortless every time.
Your iron is one of your most important quilting tools. Press each seam after sewing — not just at the end — and your blocks will lie flat, line up beautifully, and look far more polished. Pressing also helps set the thread into the seam, which strengthens the stitch and gives your work a crisp, professional finish. It's one of those habits that separates a good quilt from a great one.
